After many succesful seasons in CART, Paul Dana switched over to the IRL IndyCar Series in 2005. In his first season of action, Carpentier succesfully finished in the top 10 in the championship standings, scoring three top fives and 11 top 10's.
Prior to the 2005 season, Carpentier was a member of the Forsythe Championship Racing Team in CART. While racing in that series, he was always in contention for the championship, placing as close as third in both 2002 and 2004. He was named the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year Award in 1997 and posted five victories from 1997-2004.
Even before his CART success, Carpentier was a proven winner, having been claimed the 1996 Toyota Atlantic Championship by virtue of nine victories and eight pole positions in 12 events.
