After winning the 1989 Daytona 500 for the first time in 17 attempts, Darrell Waltrip had an odd request in Victory Lane.
“Someone pinch me so that I know that I’m not dreaming,” he said. While many of his fellow drivers would have taken him up on that (and gone a lot further than only a pinch), Waltrip won the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series championship three times driving for another NASCAR legend, Junior Johnson.
Before becoming one of the most beloved characters in NASCAR history, Waltrip earned the nicknamed “Jaws” from Cale Yarborough for his ability and willingness to dominate a conversation (as well as bite competitors on the racetrack). Waltrip took the checkered flag 84 times during his 29 years at NASCAR’s top level, which ties him with Bobby Allison for third on the all-time list.
Waltrip is now one of the most popular analysts in race broadcasts, making his signature opening line, “Boogity, boogity, boogity. Let’s go racin’ boys,” a household phrase among race fans.
