The two most dominant cars of the race were actually involved in the two biggest wrecks of the 1979 Daytona 500.
Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough survived a multi-car pile up early in the race to run away from the field in the final 100 miles.
The final lap witnessed Yarborough try a last-lap pass on Allison on the Superstretch. Allison would throw the block and the two drivers crashed in Turn 3. That opened the door for Richard Petty to win his sixth Daytona 500.
The frustration of losing spilled over after the checkered flag had fell. Bobby Allison, Donnie and Yarborough actually came to blows over the heated last-lap battle.
